The Central Epidemic Command Center announced on the 28th that there were two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 (Wuhan pneumonia) in Taiwan, involving a man in his 30s from northern Taiwan (Case 33) and a woman in her 50s (Case 34).

Case 33 traveled to Osaka, Japan, from February 17 to 22 as part of a 22-person tour group. After returning to Taiwan, he developed coughing and an itchy throat on the 25th. Due to persistent symptoms, he sought emergency care at a hospital on the 26th, was tested, and then sent home. On the 27th, the hospital reported the case for further testing, which led to today’s confirmation. The patient has been admitted to a negative pressure isolation ward by health authorities for treatment. Based on his travel history, infection in Japan is highly likely, making this an imported case.
Case 34 has underlying chronic conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. On February 14, she sought medical attention for hypoglycemia and general fatigue, and was hospitalized—she had no respiratory symptoms at the time. Starting February 21, she began showing symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, and fever. On the 26th, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, and the hospital reported her case for testing, leading to today’s confirmation. As she has not recently traveled abroad, the infection is believed to have occurred domestically, and contact tracing is actively underway.
The Command Center stated that for Case 33, they will continue monitoring the health status of fellow tour group members, family, colleagues, and other close contacts.
Additionally, as Case 34 had mostly stayed home and had no record of going out, and her household members showed no suspicious symptoms, further investigation will look into the activities of her close contacts at home, as well as any patients or medical staff she may have been in contact with during her hospital stay, to determine the source of infection.
Among the confirmed domestic cases, one has died, nine have been discharged (Cases 8, 11, and 17 were discharged yesterday), and the rest remain hospitalized.
According to data released by China's Centers for Disease Control and local health commissions across provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, there have been a cumulative total of 78,824 confirmed cases in all 31 mainland provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), marking an increase of 327 cases from the previous day. Among these, 7,952 are severe cases and 2,788 have resulted in death.
Globally, there are 4,193 confirmed cases across 49 countries and regions. The highest numbers are in South Korea with 1,766 cases, Japan’s Diamond Princess cruise ship with 687 cases (including 5 from Japan), Italy with 650 cases, Iran with 245 cases, and Japan with 213 cases. There have been 69 deaths, including 26 in Iran, 17 in Italy, 13 in South Korea, 4 on the Diamond Princess, 4 in Japan, 2 in Hong Kong, 2 in France, and 1 in the Philippines.
