On April 26, 2013, Taiwan Railways’ Pingxi Line and Enoshima Electric Railway signed a tourism cooperation agreement, using a free exchange of one-day passes as a cross-border joint marketing method to set an example for Taiwan-Japan railway exchange. The two sides further agreed to elevate their partnership from May 1, 2016, from a ticket collaboration to a formal friendship agreement between the Pingxi Line and the Enoshima Electric Railway.

In conjunction with the signing of this agreement, a “Taiwan-Japan Railway Tourism Passport” giveaway event is planned for May. Taiwanese travelers can exchange for a one-day pass at Enoshima Electric Railway’s Fujisawa Station, Enoshima Station, and Kamakura Station, while Japanese travelers can do so at Taipei Station, Ruifang Station, and will each receive a passport. The “Taiwan-Japan Railway Tourism Passport” not only introduces famous attractions along the Enoshima Electric Railway and Pingxi Line, but also includes discount coupons for use at shops along the Enoshima Electric Railway or at Taiwan Railways’ Bento Main Shop directly operated stores and Dream Factory, among others.

At the same time, Taiwan Railways will also release a commemorative edition of a one-day pass, consisting of two tickets, which is scheduled to go on limited sale in Taipei and Songshan DreamWorks in May. On Tuesday, March 15, at 10 a.m., Taiwan Railways held a ceremony at Taipei Railway Station to mark the signing of a friendship railway agreement between the Pingxi Line of Taiwan Railways and the Enoshima Electric Railway. The agreement was signed by Director-General Chou Yung-hui of Taiwan Railways and President Amano Izumi of the Enoshima Electric Railway. 

The Taiwan-Japan Railway Tourism Passport attracted online discussion as soon as it was unveiled, especially drawing attention due to the English spelling errors. Taiwan Railways expressed its apologies and noted that this design was only a preliminary draft. It will undergo review before being officially printed and issued. In the future, Taiwan and Japan will engage in broader exchanges and cooperation, attracting more mutual visits between Taiwanese and Japanese tourists, promoting the vigorous development of railway tourism, and achieving greater tourism benefits for both sides.
