Japanese master architect Toyo Ito is probably the most well-known architect to people in Taiwan. His works, such as the National Taichung Theater and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park’s Eslite, are all embodiments of his vision for urban spaces. In 2015, the media center he designed in Gifu City features an unusually shaped building that combines the functions of a library, learning center, and multimedia venue. Its uniquely designed space allows visitors to experience the special charm of nature.

This Gifu Media Center is also called “Forest for Everyone.” Master architect Toyo Ito believes that architecture should be a part of nature. Therefore, the design emphasizes harmony with nature throughout, using a large amount of local timber. As soon as you step inside, you can smell the comforting scent of wood, and the unique design makes you feel as if you are walking into a forest, where you can enjoy natural breezes and light indoors.

The Gifu Media Center is a place where people can gather, exchange ideas, and share information. Children can enjoy the space and read freely here. The interior features 11 suspended “spherical domes” that not only create a homely and cozy atmosphere but also serve to ventilate the space. On sunny days, natural daylight streams in through these domes, allowing people to read under the soft glow of natural light as if they were reading in a forest.
