The Million on the Grass Jazz Festival Makes a Grand Debut

Taiwan’s Taichung Jazz Festival enters its 14th year, kicking off in grand style on September 30. The 2016 Taichung Jazz Festival, spanning 10 days, invites jazz musicians from 13 countries across four continents—Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa—to take the stage one after another. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the world's first jazz record release, the festival will center around the theme “A Century of Jazz Awakening,” showcasing the diverse evolution of jazz styles.

During the 10-day main performance program, in addition to the main stage featuring top domestic and international jazz ensembles delivering cross-border collaborations, and the smaller stage offering accessible performances by both emerging and veteran artists, the festival expands its reach across various districts. Renowned groups will be invited to perform at series stages in the Mountain, Sea, and Tuen areas, spreading the charm of jazz far and wide.

Additionally, Grammy Award-winning American musician Aaron Lington has been invited to compose the event’s theme song, fully capturing the century-long legacy of jazz. Unlike previous years, this edition aims to revive Taichung’s jazz DNA and enrich the city’s lifestyle atmosphere through a special series of “Jazz Awakening City” activities. From traffic lights and trains to neighborhood cafés, the influence of jazz extends to every corner, awakening the city’s jazz spirit and transforming jazz from merely a feature of the October Civic Square into a defining element of Taichung’s urban lifestyle.
