The old Meishi troughs are green again—spring’s must-capture limited-time scenery

The seasonal spring beauty known as the "Old Meishi Green Stone Troughs" on the Tanjin Highway along the Northern Coast turns emerald green every spring, resembling a coastal green carpet that attracts many visitors and photography enthusiasts eager to witness its charm. This year, the stone troughs have turned green earlier than usual—time to plan your visit now!

The Old Meishi Green Stone Troughs are located near the coast at around 25K on Provincial Highway 2 of the Tanjin Highway on the Northern Coast. They only appear abundantly between March and May each year before temporarily disappearing with the arrival of summer. This year, due to climate conditions, they have turned green earlier, presenting a picturesque and breathtaking view.

The green stone troughs are formed by sea erosion grooves and seaweed. Due to their unique landscape, they attract large numbers of tourists and photography enthusiasts every spring who come to pay homage to this seasonal coastal green carpet.

In recent years, influenced by global warming and continuous rainfall, the moist environment has been favorable for seaweed growth, causing the Old Meishi stone troughs to turn green earlier. The neatly arranged stone troughs feature clear textures on the rock ridges and a uniquely magnificent shape, making them a rather special geological landscape among coastal landforms worldwide.

When visiting, remember that the surface of the stone troughs is slippery and seawater may spray from the grooves. Avoid jumping or stepping on the troughs to prevent personal injury and wear and tear on the formations.

Public Transport Information:
Take the Tamsui or Keelung bus (running between the two cities) from in front of Tamsui MRT Station or next to Keelung Railway Station, and get off at the "Old Meishi" stop. Walk straight past the Old Meishi community to reach the site.
