A Hidden Valley Gem with Healing Scenery – A Must-Visit Tranquil Retreat

This hidden valley sanctuary nestled in the mountains not only boasts healing natural beauty but also features a rich ecological environment thanks to successful conservation efforts, making it a perfect spot for travelers to unwind and forget their worries.

The name Danaiyu is a direct transliteration from the Tsou language. It is one of Taiwan’s rare clean streams, located upstream of the Zengwen River at an altitude of about 500 meters. The valley stretches 18 kilometers and enjoys a pleasant climate with beautiful scenery.

Over a decade ago, the ecological condition of Danaiyu Valley was concerning, with overfishing, shrimp catching, and water pollution by people, which the local Tsou people could no longer tolerate. Determined to protect this vital water resource that is the lifeblood of their tribe, they initiated conservation efforts. Today, the restored valley reveals crystal-clear waters and a thriving ecosystem.

Danaiyu Ecological Park is Taiwan’s first ecopark initiated by local communities. Managed by the Shanmei Community Development Association, it is open to visitors who pay a small fee for cleaning and maintenance. In recent years, it has become a popular new attraction in Alishan.

Danaiyu Valley is not only abundant in natural ecology but also offers serene walking trails. The stream sparkles through the valley, surrounded by rugged rocks, while birds and butterflies flutter along both banks. The valley is also rich in fish species, such as the abundant Formosan trout, commonly known as “bitter flower fish,” which call this place home.
