Recently, Mr. Wang Feng, a leading figure in China’s rock music scene and brand ambassador for HowToTrip, successfully arrived in Dali, Yunnan. As the guide for the fifth stop of this year’s “Search for Everyday Pioneers” event—“Land of Ultimate Joy”—Wang Feng led his team in Dali, the birthplace of China’s original music, in search of the spirit of original music and musicians who courageously pursue their dreams. As the final stop of this edition of the event, this journey also signals its upcoming successful conclusion.

Dongjing music is a traditional folk instrumental genre with a long history that has been praised by UNESCO as a valuable cultural heritage of all mankind. In Heqing County, Dali, generations of folk artists have preserved Dongjing music. It is thanks to their anonymous, century-long dedication that this music has endured. During this Ultimate Joy journey, Wang Feng and his exploration team followed the trail of music to this place. The Dongjing artists surprised them by playing “Unleashed” on leaf instruments, leaving Wang Feng in prolonged, awestruck silence. In addition to listening to traditional Dongjing music, he also engaged in an in-depth musical exchange with Zhang Shuxian, a local Bai ethnic sanxian folk artist. Though their musical styles differ, both original musicians share a common passion for music and an unwavering pursuit of their art. As a highly influential leader in China’s rock music scene, Teacher Wang Feng hopes to help more people discover, understand, and promote the long-standing traditional music of China through his efforts.

Ultimate Joy Journey Team

Among the Ultimate Joy Journey team were two special members—Chen Can and Zhou Chuyan—who earned the precious opportunity to travel with Teacher Wang Feng due to their outstanding performances in the preliminary and knockout rounds. The task of these two volunteers was to search the streets of Dali for ethnic and modern music artists and organize mixed-band PK competitions. The first group included a young European guitarist and ruan player, a Hong Kong drummer, and elderly members of the local Nan Zhuang Ancient Music Association. The second group featured a keyboardist who played by blowing into the instrument, a lead singer they met at a zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste) shop, and their friends. As the guide for the Dali stop, Wang Feng returned to the judge’s seat for the first time since The Voice—not on a swivel chair, but on a straw mat in a mountain village temple.

The “Search for Everyday Pioneers” event, hosted by HowToTrip, has been held for its third edition since 2011. The event consists of five stops, and the successful completion of the fifth marks the upcoming conclusion of the 2013 “Search for Everyday Pioneers” campaign. Since its launch on February 27 of this year, the event has garnered widespread attention and support from outdoor enthusiasts. Volunteers, under the guidance of five different types of exploration mentors—polar exploration mentor and mountaineer Wang Jing (Fei Xue Jing Jing), ecological exploration mentor Chen Liangzhong, spiritual exploration mentor Yu Yuntian, humanities exploration mentor Li Shuankuo, and rock exploration mentor Wang Feng—ventured to five extreme regions in search of courageous pioneers. Whether it was the Sherpas encountered on Mount Everest, the scientific researchers protecting Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys in Baima Snow Mountain, the director dedicated to making documentaries in Shangri-La, the indigenous people preserving nearly-lost culture near Kawagebo, or the artists in Dali carrying on the Dongjing music tradition—all are brave pioneers. Their stories are hoped to inspire more people to overcome fear and forge their own life paths.
