After the opening of Breeze Nan Shan in early 2019 and reports of tenants pulling out, Breeze Plaza has recently been hit by layoffs. Observers believe different locations of the plaza face varying rental pressures, while Breeze Plaza stated this was a routine human resources and organizational adjustment — a claim that seems reasonable given the timing after the Lunar New Year.

With the COVID-19 outbreak spreading, many people are avoiding public spaces, leading to a decline in tourism activities and subsequently reduced retail, F&B, and clothing purchases. The Xinyi District has also seen noticeably fewer visitors than usual.
Apart from its flagship store on FuXing South Road, Breeze Department Store has three outlets in Xinyi District — Breeze Song Gao, Breeze Xinyi, and Breeze Nan Shan. Additionally, Breeze Nanjing and Breeze Taipei Main Station are actively developing their F&B offerings. With more department stores emerging, not only is the competition among F&B brands fierce, but the brand mix in other categories also affects the revenue stability of malls. If foot traffic continues to decline due to the pandemic, tenants unable to shoulder rents will gradually withdraw. In this context, Breeze’s workforce reduction should come as no surprise.
