The Outdoor Environmental Protection Day was proposed and initiated due to the current boom in domestic outdoor sports and activities, while public environmental awareness still needs to be continuously enhanced. As is widely known, with the constant improvement of people's living standards, there is a growing pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Nationwide, an increasing number of nature lovers venture into the great outdoors to embrace nature—commonly referred to as "outdoor enthusiasts"—are rising, and the outdoor organizing scene is thriving. However, due to insufficient environmental protection awareness among some groups or individuals participating in outdoor activities, the phenomenon of littering is still widespread. Although some outdoor public welfare and environmental organizations often spontaneously organize clean-up efforts, the results have been less than ideal. Trash continues to accumulate in popular outdoor destinations or piles up again shortly after being cleaned. Government departments often find themselves unable to effectively allocate manpower to these areas frequented by “outdoor enthusiasts.” In light of this situation, the “Outdoor Environmental Protection Day” came into being.
This is an environmental event initiated by civil society groups. This event is proposed by environmental advocates from the public and jointly launched by several civil teams, including the Public Welfare Group of Outdoor Circle Network and various local outdoor clubs.
Multi-province cross-regional simultaneous coordination. The event spans the following regions: Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Henan, Heilongjiang; Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing; Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia—21 provinces coordinating simultaneously across regions.
The main routes of this event feature distinct characteristics of large-scale outdoor activities. They mainly include leisure routes such as urban environmental protection, green park clean-ups, forest conservation, and ecological protection. As many volunteers have said: “Environmental protection is for everyone, and environmental protection relies on everyone.” Let us take May 27, 2014, as a brand-new starting point. Regardless of region, type of group, size of organization, age, or status, let’s join hands and together sound the clarion call of “I Love the Outdoors, I Protect the Environment,” and enthusiastically participate in the “Outdoor Environmental Protection Day” activities. Let’s work together to make the “Outdoor Environmental Protection Day” a shining environmental calling card for China. We look forward to more provinces, more groups, and more friends joining this extraordinary large-scale public environmental protection activity, so we can together create a new realm of public welfare environmental initiatives.
To this end, the organizing committee of this “Outdoor Environmental Protection Day” specially proposes: designating the last Sunday of each May as “Outdoor Environmental Protection Day,” to awaken everyone’s awareness of green environmental protection and a healthy lifestyle.
