The “Ring in the Festive Season” Spring Festival event at Hengdian Film and Television City has been successfully held for ten years. In 2015, alongside maintaining its usual festive vibe, the more “earthy” and “authentic” “Hengguo Grand Temple Fair” is set to unfold during the Spring Festival. Visit the temple fair, enjoy local cuisine, walk on gold bricks, and take home silver coins, red envelopes, and lucky gift bags—this year at Hengdian Film and Television City, it's all about playing “rich” and soaking in the festive spirit.

Celebrate an Exciting Spring Festival in Hengdian

Gold Bricks and Silver Coins – Flaunt Your Wealth Freely

What does it mean to be rich? Having a floor paved with gold bricks? Scattering silver coins everywhere?

When it comes to planning events, Hengdian Film and Television City has always had an unapologetically lavish, no-expense-spared “tycoon” attitude. Back in the summer of 2014, they splashed out 8 million yuan on the “8th Anniversary” series of events, the impact of which can still be felt. For the 2015 Spring Festival event, they’re going even bigger—going head-to-head with real gold and silver.

Golden Avenue Don’t let the name “Golden Avenue” fool you—it’s the epitome of extravagance this time. On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, at the Children's Dream Factory Square in Dream Valley, an 18.18-meter-long “Golden Avenue” will be laid out right on the ground. This Golden Avenue is the real deal: within specially designed glass display cases, the entire 18.18-meter stretch is paved entirely with 999 fine gold bricks. Chinese people have a tradition of seeking wealth and fortune, especially during the Spring Festival—stepping on gold is believed to bring financial luck and attract prosperity.

Hengguo Tongbao “Hengguo Tongbao” isn’t anything else but silver coins made of fine silver. There are two types: large silver coins and small silver coins. For this Spring Festival event, Hengdian Film and Television City has prepared a total of 200,000 silver coins of various sizes, piled up like a silver mountain. All of these silver coins will be given out free to visitors. Additionally, there will be dozens of silver bars and silver peace charm medals in varying weights, also made of pure silver, to be handed out for free during the Spring Festival.

In addition to gold bricks and silver coins, Dream Valley has also prepared gold bars, silver bars, golden apples in different weights and quantities, as well as small gifts such as gold eggs, gift bags, and red envelopes counted in the “thousands” and “tens of thousands.” The total value of just the giveaways reaches millions of yuan.

Welcoming the God of Wealth on the Fifth Day of the Lunar New Year

Give, give, give—no need to ask why

During the Spring Festival, Hengdian Film and Television City has prepared a bounty of gifts—all meant to be given away. No need to ask why—it’s the perk of having money to spare.

But just how generous are they with their giveaways?

On New Year’s Day, Give Away Gifts! Handing out gifts to one in a hundred? That’s not “being rich”—giving everyone something is what true generosity looks like. Every visitor who buys a ticket on New Year’s Day will receive one small silver coin of “Hengguo Tongbao.” No matter which scenic area or ticket type you purchase, you qualify. First come, first served, until supplies last. On New Year’s Day, everyone rushes in for a bit of good luck.

Online Pre-order? Get a Gift! Anyone who pre-purchases a travel package for New Year’s Day to the seventh online between January 20 and February 11 will have a chance to receive a New Year’s gift bag. Inside are “beautiful dollars,” “beautiful silver,” “beautiful beauty,” “beautiful food,” “beautiful dreams…”—all sorts of lovely things are carefully packed inside. What kind of goodie you’ll get depends purely on luck. There are 2,015 gift bags in total, ready to be handed out—and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Buy a “Combo Ticket + Dream Valley”? Get a Gift! From New Year’s Day to the fifth, any visitor purchasing a “Combo Ticket + Dream Valley” will receive one large silver coin. First come, first served, until supplies run out (Note: group ticket purchases will receive small silver coins).

God of Wealth Festival? Get a Gift! The fifth day of the Lunar New Year is the traditional day to welcome the God of Wealth. “Welcome the God of Wealth, strike it rich.” On this day, the God of Wealth will be handing out red envelopes. Ten thousand red envelopes contain all kinds of unexpected gifts—even cash, that cliché favorite, is tucked inside. What won’t they dare to put in there?

Born in the Year of the Sheep? Get a Gift! 2015 is the Year of the Sheep, so those born in that zodiac year definitely deserve some privileges. On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, 2000 gold eggs will be available exclusively for those born in the Year of the Sheep. 2000 gold eggs—sure to keep your hammer swinging till you tire out.

Hourly Treasure Unveiling? Get a Gift! From New Year’s Day to the fifth, Dream Valley will also host an “Hourly Treasure Unveiling” session—every evening at 19:00, before the start of the show “Storm Mountain Flood,” seat-ticket holders can enter a live lottery draw. Winners are drawn on the spot, with five major prizes given out daily—a silver peace charm medallion worth a thousand yuan.

Eat Dumplings? Get a Gift! Eating dumplings is a must during the New Year. If you visit Dream Valley on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, there will be a big pot of dumplings waiting. The first 1,000 visitors to enter the park can enjoy two free dumplings. The highlight of this tycoon-style dumpling feast isn’t the dumplings themselves, but the “filling.” Hidden among 2,000 dumplings are gold bars and silver bars—all solid gold and silver. Imagine actually biting into one—might you break a tooth? Tough call on whether to eat or not.

The Hengdian Grand Temple Fair: 7 Days of Spring Festival Fun

The Hengdian Grand Temple Fair brings all the festive cheer you’d expect

We got a bit carried away showing off and being carefree, but forgot to get to the main point. Actually, the full theme of this year’s Spring Festival activities at Hengdian World Studios is “The Hengdian Grand Temple Fair: 7 Days of Spring Festival Fun.” That’s the real highlight of this year’s celebration.

For a Spring Festival temple fair, liveliness is a must, and the festive vibe is non-negotiable. So what makes the Hengdian Grand Temple Fair special, and just how lively does it get?

Traditional Temple Fair Acts Temple fairs wouldn’t be complete without performances—acrobatics, variety arts, music, and theatrical acts have always been the stars of traditional fairs. Most vivid childhood memories of temple fairs revolve around those fascinating and mysterious skills. This Spring Festival week, Hengdian World Studios has invited an acrobatics troupe from Wuqiao, known as the “No.1 Acrobatics Village under Heaven,” to put on shows. Wuqiao acrobatics are famous for their thrilling and jaw-dropping feats, and many of the acts this time are rare sights in southern China, with some even being national intangible cultural heritage items. Among them, the “Iron Flower Show” stands out the most.

Iron Flower Show The Iron Flower Show is an ancient folk entertainment activity, also called “molten iron splashing.” It involves pouring superheated molten iron into a specially made container, then using explosive force to hurl it into the air. In an instant, the molten iron transforms into a dazzling shower of sparks, scattering like a heavenly maiden tossing flowers—shapes constantly shifting, brilliant against the night sky. It resembles fireworks but is distinct from them. This breathtaking act combines danger with visual splendor, demanding exceptional physical ability and technical skill from the performers. The molten iron can reach temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees Celsius, so performers must strike with full force to send the iron flying high and scattering widely, allowing it to burn and cool into tiny particles in midair to prevent burns. If the force isn’t strong enough or the aim is off, the iron won’t disperse fully, limiting its height and creating not only an unimpressive display but also a serious risk of injury to the performer or bystanders. Therefore, the Iron Flower Show requires both abundant stamina and mastery of the technique. This thousand-year-old spectacle, much like many other intangible cultural heritage traditions in China, is on the verge of being lost, only occasionally seen during Spring Festival or Lantern Festival gatherings in northern towns. This Spring Festival, visitors to Hengdian will have the rare opportunity to witness this fiery, shimmering wonder.

Old Beijing Food Festival Just as acrobatics are essential, so is food at any temple fair. These days, food festivals abound everywhere, yet they often end up looking and tasting much the same. This Spring Festival, Hengdian World Studios is spotlighting classic Old Beijing specialties—dozens of authentic Beijing snacks such as quick-boiled tripe, sausage-like blood pudding, mashed pea cake, dragon beard candy, glutinous rice rolls with bean flour, sticky rice balls with sweet filling, and candied fried dough twists—all evoking nostalgia for traditional treats and the colorful legends behind Old Beijing cuisine.

The Welcome-the-Lantern Festival Light Display Whenever there's a Spring Festival, temple fair, or traditional or religious holiday, lantern displays are a must—they bring the festive atmosphere to life. This Spring Festival, the Dream Valley scenic area has been decked out in colorful lights, exuding nothing but joy. Over 20 large-scale illuminated displays, including “Three Rams Bring Prosperity,” “Prosperity, Wealth, Longevity, Happiness,” “Golden Rams Celebrate Spring,” and “Splendid Lotus in a Flourishing Age,” are scattered throughout the park. It’s reported that all these light installations were meticulously crafted by the self-proclaimed “No.1 Lantern Makers under Heaven”—the lantern-making team from Zigong. Zigong lanterns have a history of thousands of years and enjoy international fame. This year, the tallest lantern installation in Dream Valley’s “Lantern Carnival” reaches up to 25 meters, with the widest spanning 8 meters. They will remain lit from New Year’s Day through the seventh day of the lunar new year.

The Hengdian Grand Temple Fair Revives Traditional Crafts

Welcoming the God of Wealth The fifth day of the lunar new year is dedicated to welcoming the God of Wealth, naturally one of the most important days during the Spring Festival. On this day, Hengdian World Studios goes all out, inviting five deities of wealth who set off from the God of Wealth Temple in the Guangzhou Street scenic area. They parade around Hengdian Town, visiting five major scenic spots—the Ming & Qing Palace, the Qin King’s Palace, Along the River During the Qingming Festival, the Ming & Qing Residential Complex, and the Huaxia Cultural Park—to hold “God of Wealth Worship” ceremonies. In the evening, the five Wealth Gods, escorted by the “Hengdian Imperial Guards,” will gather at Dream Valley to hand out red envelopes to the crowds.

Live Experience of “Dragon Blade”  On New Year’s Day, the period action film “Dragon Blade,” starring Jackie Chan, Hollywood actor John Cusack, Oscar winner Adrien Brody, and Korean pop idol Choi Siwon, will officially be celebrated. The movie was filmed for over two months in early 2014 primarily at the Qin King’s Palace, which served as one of its main filming locations. Key props used in the film—such as Roman war chariots—were also created by Hengdian World Studios’ set design team. During the Spring Festival, Hengdian World Studios will recreate parts of the movie’s sets and props for visitors to experience, offering a truly unique highlight of the Hengdian temple fair.
