The resort island of Boracay was closed on April 26 this year. Philippine President Duterte, aiming to address the island's severe pollution and sewage discharge issues, implemented an "island closure policy" to temporarily suspend tourist access, accelerating environmental protection and related infrastructure projects. After more than half a year of closure, the island is scheduled to reopen on October 26.

A "plastic ban" has also been announced, imposing restrictions on local businesses. Hotels, resorts, and restaurants are prohibited from providing single-use plastic products such as plastic bags, plastic straws, and Styrofoam. Tourists who need these items must bring their own. Violators will face fines, confiscation of single-use plastics, and repeated non-compliance may even result in revocation of business licenses.

Years of growing tourist numbers have gradually strained Boracay’s environment, and visitor limits may be imposed in the future.
As Boracay’s fame grew, so did the number of tourists, leading to an influx of outsiders seeking livelihoods on the island. Over time, this overwhelmed the environment. After more than half a year of revitalization efforts, conditions have improved, and future visitor flow controls may be introduced to limit entry to numbers the environment can sustain.
