Take the MRT to explore hidden gems: Scenic routes through historic urban trails revealed

When Taipei’s Beitou district is mentioned, it’s often synonymous with hot springs. However, there is a lakeside settlement rich in cultural history and precious ecological resources, tucked away within the Shanshan community in Beitou. Though the Lakeside Settlement lacks hot springs, its minimal historical development and mountainous location have gradually made it a rural hidden gem known only to locals.

After the city government developed the Lakeside Settlement Trail, connecting attractions such as the century-old soapberry tree platform, century-old traditional houses, red-brick pigsties, and camellia fields, it began attracting visitors interested in nature and cultural history.

The century-old soapberry tree at the entrance of the Lakeside Settlement was planted by immigrants from Quanzhou, Fujian Province, in the early days. At that time, women would gather the soapberry fruits to use as a natural detergent for washing clothes, and rest under the shade of the old tree after meals during busy farming seasons. The tree’s concentric rings record the development trajectory of the community.

In 2012, the tree gradually declined due to parasitic plants but has since recovered thanks to care from the Bureau of Urban Development. It also continues to honor the pact made under golden leaves with local residents. Through the annual Summer Music Concert event, visitors can listen to elders share memories of the past and witness together the enduring charm of the century-old soapberry tree.

Walking along the Hudi Road toward Hushan Road on the Hengling Ancient Trail, through mountain paths and waterscapes, heading toward Shanshan, you’ll first come across the historic Maple Sister Trees Platform, a resting spot for hikers. As the trail gently ascends along Shamao Mountain with minimal elevation change, the various plant identification signs along the way add delightful insights to the hike.
