The Moment of Successful Smile Selling
Having seen all kinds of creative gifts, selling smiles is truly rare. This creative product appeared at the world’s first camping fair—Wulong Fairy Mountain C-MART, which opened on the 18th of this month.
The camping fair features a variety of artworks, but the most unexpected thing is that someone actually “sold” smiles at the fair—and even received tips from hundreds of visitors. These four young people were Weibo influencers who were “recruited” to take part in the C-MART experience trip. They also joined the fair as C-Mart participants, treating “smiles” as a creative commodity to sell on-site.
At the moment of receiving tips, both vendors and visitors at the scene became their targets
An “80s” young man, after hearing jokes from two “90s” participants, burst out laughing and, starting from the minimum tip of 0.01 yuan, directly gave them 20 yuan. The young man said, “I think it’s great that they’re so creative and having fun. It’s a wonderful thing. Who says such things can only happen in Europe? It’s happening right here on Fairy Mountain. I think it should be encouraged.”
But others had different opinions. Aunt Zhai, who had been watching for a long time, remained unmoved and showed no intention of tipping. In an interview, Aunt Zhai said angrily, “Why aren’t these young people working properly? Instead, they come here to act cute. What’s the difference between this and busking or begging?”
When told about this opinion, the two post-90s participants laughed heartily. In their view, it was just for fun. “On Fairy Mountain, in such a close-to-nature and open space, what isn’t possible?” They believe, “Selling is just a form of communication. We’re happy to provide joy, and those who like it are willing to tip—that’s the happiest kind of transaction.”
Fairy Mountain C-MART Camping Fair
C-MART, short for Camping Mart, is a high-end creative fair deeply rooted in outdoor culture and the camping lifestyle. At C-MART, both vendors and consumers come with tents, camping while trading. This is the world’s first camping creative fair, created by the Wulong Fairy Mountain Scenic Area.
All participants at C-MART are called “C-Martters.” High-end wedding dresses, Spanish red wine, Michelin desserts, designer fashion items, handmade woodenware, internet-famous noodles... Each vendor sets up shop in a tent, displaying a dazzling array of goods in all shapes and forms. There are not only locally made products from Chongqing, but also a collection of global delicacies to broaden your horizons.
On-site Vendors
There are also alternative offerings: “stand-up comics selling jokes,” mysterious singers “selling” songs, and post-90s participants humorously “selling cuteness”—all incredibly creative and beyond imagination.
“This is the most natural and open maker camp. I really admire these vendors,” said Mr. Chen, who came to the site.
It is reported that as the highly anticipated 2015 Camping Music Festival, confirmed guests include Chinese music superstars such as Emil Chau, Hebe Tien, Tanya Chua, and Xu Wei. Ticket sales for the festival started on the 13th, offering single-day tickets for August 7 and 8 at 238 yuan each. Tickets can be purchased on the Wulong Tourism official website (www.wlkst.com), and the hotline for inquiries is 4008023666.
