Temperatures drop again ! So cold ! A cold wave has arrived, with snow also falling on Yushan and Hehuanshan. From the evening of January 28 to February 1, temperatures across the region will be significantly lower, with a chance of temperatures below 10°C. The Meteorological Bureau has issued a low temperature warning.

January 29 (Lunar 5th, Wednesday): Affected by the cold wave, the weather across the region will be very cold. Temperatures below 10°C are expected during the night and early morning, with large day-night temperature differences in central and southern areas. Parts of northern and eastern Taiwan may see localized brief showers, while scattered brief showers are possible in mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan. Other regions, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will be mostly cloudy to sunny. Areas north of Kaohsiung, eastern Taiwan (including Green Island and Orchid Island), the Hengchun Peninsula, and coastal and open areas of Penghu, Kinmen, are prone to strong gusts of wind at force 8 to 9.
The Meteorological Bureau's low temperature warning signals for January 29 are as follows:
Orange signal (very cold)
Keelung City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City: There is a chance of sustained temperatures around or below 10°C. Please take precautions.
Yellow signal (cold)
Taipei City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Yilan County: There is a chance of temperatures below 10°C.
Thursday to Saturday (January 30 to February 1, Lunar 6th to 8th): Most areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny, with only occasional scattered showers in Hualien and Taitung.Affected by the cold wave, it will be very cold. In addition, due to radiative cooling effects during the night and early morning in western Taiwan, temperatures in areas north of Kaohsiung and in northeastern Taiwan will only be between 8°C and 11°C.Temperatures in open areas or plains near mountainous regions may be even lower. Pingtung and Hualien-Taitung will only reach around 12°C to 14°C. During the day, the northern regions—most affected by the cold wave—will see daytime highs of only around 13°C to 15°C, keeping temperatures low throughout the day.
Sunday to next Tuesday (February 2 to 4): The cold wave weakens slightly. Due to radiative cooling, early morning and evening temperatures remain low, but daytime temperatures gradually rise. However, northern Taiwan will still feel cool throughout the day, with large day-night temperature differences in central and southern areas. Weather-wise, most areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny, with only scattered light rain in Hualien-Taitung. By next Tuesday, moisture levels increase slightly, bringing localized brief showers to eastern Taiwan, while other areas remain mostly cloudy to sunny.
February 5 to 7 (next Wednesday to Friday): The northeast monsoon strengthens again, bringing localized brief showers to windward northern and eastern regions, while central and southern areas remain mostly cloudy to sunny.
Stay well bundled up. When using gas water heaters and electric heating appliances, ensure proper indoor ventilation and electrical safety. Guard against respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses caused by the cold. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold environments. Make sure children’s heads, necks, hands, and feet are kept warm. Look out for the elderly, homeless, and vulnerable groups with cold protection measures. Winter is flu season—pay attention to hand hygiene and cough etiquette, and stay home when sick. Farmers and aquaculture industries should beware of cold damage.
