In recent years, independent travel has become a popular option for Taiwanese when going abroad, and airfare and accommodation are two major travel expenses. We’ve previously shared how to buy cheap plane tickets, but what about lodging? Here are eight money-saving tips for booking hotels—learn them quickly!

1.Choose your type of accommodation

With the global rise in tourism and travel trends, accommodation options have become increasingly diverse—from five-star hotels to business hotels, resorts, budget stays, daily rental suites, and even couchsurfing. Each option has its own way to save money. Most booking websites allow you to reserve rooms and stay updated on deals, and there are also apps you can download to check availability.

2.Book early to enjoy discounts

Generally speaking, the earlier you book, the more discounts you can get. Booking three months in advance will usually secure an early-bird rate, though sometimes promotions may offer good prices closer to the date. Keeping an eye on various accommodation options at your travel destination not only helps you find your preferred place to stay but can also save you a significant amount on travel costs.

3.The day of the week you book matters

Normally, hotel prices are highest on Fridays and Saturdays, which are peak booking times, while weekdays from Monday to Thursday are relatively cheaper and easier to book. However, be mindful of any special events or festivals happening at your destination, as they could cause significant price fluctuations.

4.Location affects price

Generally, the more central and convenient the accommodation, the higher the price. Conversely, places farther from the station or with less convenient transportation tend to be cheaper. When making trade-offs, factor in transportation costs into the overall price for comparison. For example, staying near the station might be more expensive, but if the total cost with commuting from a cheaper, farther location ends up similar, you might save the hassle of extra travel and make a clearer choice.

5.Watch out for extra fees

Travelers often get caught off guard by hidden charges on booking websites. Always check what’s included in your reservation—some don’t include breakfast and require an additional purchase, while others provide breakfast in the base price. Some hotels even offer complimentary services like afternoon tea, luggage storage, or gym access. Making use of these extras can sometimes save you a decent amount on your trip.

6.Join hotel loyalty programs

Many international hotels and resorts have membership programs. Travelers can sign up online to become members of their favorite hotels and sometimes enjoy significantly discounted member rates. You can even call or write directly to the accommodation provider and might receive special surprises, such as free room upgrades.

7.Ask about room upgrades

When checking in at the front desk, try asking if they can upgrade your room or switch it to a mountain or sea view room. Sometimes, if occupancy is low, staff may offer a complimentary upgrade based on availability. This way, you can enjoy a better stay experience and save on upgrade fees.

8.Travel during the off-season

If you’re not particular about visiting a destination during its peak tourist season, traveling in the off-season is the most budget-friendly option. Prices for accommodations in the off-season can be two times lower—or even more—compared to the peak season. Plus, you won’t have to deal with crowds, making it a great choice to save money and avoid the masses.
