The Longest Sandpit in Northern Taiwan: Y-Year Park’s Major Renovation Makes It a Great Family Destination

Having a history of over a century, Hsinchu Park originally had a children's play area at the back featuring generic playground equipment and poor environmental conditions. However, after renovations by the Hsinchu City Government, it has been transformed into an accessible and inclusive play zone. The park now also features the longest sandpit in northern Taiwan, giving Hsinchu yet another great family leisure spot.

The former children's play area behind Hsinchu Park has undergone a major renovation and has been renamed the “Hsinchu Park Big Sandpit.” It features nearly 100 meters of sandpit facilities, including three different types of sandpits: a regular sandpit, a fine-sand wet pit, and a white fine-sand toddler pit—allowing children of all ages to have fun.

In addition to the sandpit, all play equipment in the area is designed as accessible and inclusive play structures, ensuring that all children can enjoy playing safely. Equipment includes terrazzo “landscaped slides,” nest-style and diaper-style swings, and various spinning discs. The ground surface has been upgraded with materials such as mosaic stone and seamless elastic mats to ensure accessibility, allowing strollers and wheelchairs to move around easily.

To address the original issue of poor drainage in the play zone, this renovation specifically improved the drainage capacity of the lawn areas. More durable grass species were selected to better withstand foot traffic, providing visitors with a higher-quality recreational space. Additionally, various rest facilities have been installed around the play area, taking advantage of the existing shaded spaces to create leisure zones for children and seniors, thus enhancing the overall environmental quality of Hsinchu Park.

The city government’s Hsinchu Park renovation project is being gradually completed. The popular Lichi Garden, launched in 2018, received widespread acclaim. Recently, the large sandpit play area has been completed. Next up are the Hsinchu Zoo, set to be finished in the second half of this year, and the Citizen Square integrated with the track and field stadium. These developments will further elevate Hsinchu Park into an accessible, barrier-free family recreation destination.
