While driving around Liugui, you’ll often spot triangular warning signs featuring butterfly patterns along the roadside, reminding drivers to “watch out for butterflies.” This is probably one of those small joys you can only experience in the mountains. As April arrives, spring brings a burst of vibrant colors and lively energy, followed by countless butterflies fluttering gracefully. Liugui was once known as the “Valley of Butterflies,” and it truly lives up to its reputation.

Along the roads in Liugui, you might occasionally come across a “Watch Out for Butterflies” warning sign.
In Xinliao, Liugui, there’s a naturally flowing ancient well that’s over a century old. Near the only grocery store in Xinliao, a sign for the Gujing Bobo by the alleyway marks the landmark. Following the red-brick wall, you can explore the Xinliao Ancient Trail. The century-old well at the entrance of the hiking trail was originally a source of spring water, which gradually attracted settlers and led to the formation of the village. In the past, every early morning, crowds would gather around the well to draw water. Even now, locals use water from this well to brew tea.

Newlyweds flock to the romantic mahogany avenue for photos
Just a ten-minute walk uphill from the ancient well, you’ll reach Xinyi Forest Park. Strolling along this over 200-year-old historic trail, you can enjoy a refreshing forest bath and immerse yourself in nature—the best way to experience it is to “take it slow.” Within Xinyi Forest Park lies a mahogany avenue stretching approximately 2 kilometers, which is most stunning during the leaf-falling season in April and May. Countless leaves flutter down like rain, casting dappled shadows under the towering ancient trees, creating a particularly poetic scene. From the observation deck, you can gaze at the meandering Qiaonong River and admire the picturesque mountain and water scenery. At night, you can also enjoy the light show on Kaohsiung’s most beautiful butterfly bridge (Xinyi Bridge).
