The Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival 2019: 300-person Sand Sculpture Treasure Hunt Awaits Guinness World Record

The 2019 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Art Festival marks its 12th year. With the theme “Journey Through the Town to Find Atlantis,” the event runs from April 19 to August 25, spanning 128 days. It gathers 25 sand sculptors from seven countries including Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Malaysia, and Taiwan at Fulong Beach to create a total of 65 themed, interactive, and competitive sand sculptures, bringing the underwater world of Atlantis to life. Throughout the exhibition period, there will be a host of exciting activities — including a Guinness World Record challenge, a beach cleanup music festival — and visitors can snap photos with the sand sculptures and upload them to the official fan page for a chance to win round-trip economy class tickets on China Airlines for two. This year’s theme, “Journey Through the Town to Find Atlantis,” features 25 themed sand sculpture works, along with up to 20 smaller interactive sand sculptures within the exhibition area, plus 20 pieces from both international and domestic sand sculpture competitions — all centered around the hot topic of Atlantis and oceanic themes. In addition to showcasing imaginative sand art, some creations incorporate marine debris with sand, aiming to raise visitors’ awareness of marine ecological conservation through artistic expression.

Take for example the sand sculpture “Where Is My Home,” featuring a hermit crab — but instead of living in a seashell, it resides in a sand-sculpted bottle cap. Through this symbolic environmental education piece, the festival aims to awaken public consciousness about marine protection. This year’s main sculpture stands 8 meters tall and was created over two weeks by eight sand sculptors, forming a fantastical marine castle titled “Reviving the Ocean Paradise – Atlantis.” It surrounds ancient to modern marine life, representing a carnival-like marine paradise that emerges as public awareness of ocean conservation grows. Beyond its educational message, this year’s sand sculpture exhibition also allows the public to enter the sculpture area for a treasure hunt, offering a more interactive and unique experience.

This year’s sand sculpture display will also attempt to break a Guinness World Record by creating 300 dolphin sand sculptures inspired by the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins unique to the Northeast Coast, standing tall in Fulong. This aims to set the record for “the most people creating sand sculptures together in the world.” On June 15, the organizers will invite 300 members of the public to complete this grand feat under the guidance of sand sculptors. This year’s sand sculpture festival will feature over 365 sand sculptures, making it the largest in history. Organizers have also planned special promotions: take photos at Fulong’s sand sculptures and post them online for chances to win tickets to Lihpao Marina Water Park, rides on the Sky Dream Ferris Wheel, and the grand prize of round-trip economy class tickets on China Airlines to regional destinations.
