Report from China Jiangxi Net by reporterOuyang YuanyuanThe report says: In every sports event, there is such a group of people who arrive earlier and leave later than others, whose hard work is no less than that of the athletes on the field, and whose efforts are solely aimed at making every competition more fair and just. They are called “referees.”
The Guomao Real Estate “Run, Jiangxi!” 2016 First Urban Orienteering Competition is about to start. On the morning of the 3rd, 46 volunteers from all walks of life gathered together to receive training as orienteering competition referees.
Some are university students, some are ordinary citizens, but most are volunteers who have long been dedicated to public welfare activities. “Before stepping into their positions, all volunteers for ‘Run, Jiangxi!’ must receive training on basic orienteering knowledge, event introductions, etiquette standards, familiarize themselves with checkpoints, related safety knowledge, and corresponding emergency response measures to ensure the smooth running of the competition,” explained the organizing committee head.
Due to the large scale and complex operations of this event, strict requirements are placed on volunteers. It is understood that in addition to needing a strong physique, certain communication and coordination skills, abundant love, and a strong sense of responsibility, those who become referees also need to have certain orienteering competition experience and emergency medical assistance skills.
“On the day of the competition, we will arrive at our assigned positions two hours before the official start time. Orienteering is different from competitive sports; it’s a mass-participation activity. During the race, referees not only officiate the events, but also, as temperatures may be relatively high that day, pay attention to the physical condition of participants and offer corresponding advice and services. I’m very much looking forward to how all the team members will perform on June 18th,” said the chief referee.
