Hot air balloon rides over rice fields – the northern version of Taiwan’s Puzi Boulevard is ultra-healing

The rice fields in Sanqi Village, Dongshan Township, Yilan County, turn into emerald green waves of crops every May, and golden yellow rice waves when the ears mature in June. With unobstructed paths through the fields, it has earned the nickname “Yilan’s Puzi Boulevard.” In sync with the rice growing season, from May through the end of the harvest in late June, the Dongshan Beautiful Paths Through Rice Fields series of events has been launched to showcase the healing beauty of the rice fields in various ways.

This year’s Beautiful Paths Through Rice Fields series features the four characters “稻间美径” (Beautiful Paths Through Rice Fields) designed into the green fields, along with a hot air balloon landscape motif. A specially built container viewing platform offers a chance to admire the colorful painted rice fields from a three-story-high observation deck.

Other activities include light bicycle tours, rice wave concerts, and a hot air balloon carnival, allowing visitors not only to stroll through the rice fields but also to take hot air balloon rides for a bird’s-eye view of the golden waves. The “Hot Air Balloon Carnival” will be held on June 8, 9, 15, and 16, with on-site ticket sales and shuttle bus services.

The Sanqi Rice Wave Light Bicycle Tour kicks off on six Saturdays starting May 11, connecting various local attractions, including a visit to the newly completed secret spot of the Dongshan River source – Jiuliao Waterfall. There’s also a DIY session for fried tea leaves unique to the Neishan Tea Garden and an electric boat ride along the old river channel, combining exercise with an in-depth journey through Dongshan Township.

During the Beautiful Paths Through Rice Fields event period, traffic control is enforced, and vehicles larger than motorcycles are prohibited from using the Sanqi Village farm roads, except for official vehicles and farming machinery on the rice fields.
