Another popular old building in Taipei’s western district is the South Airport Apartments on Zhonghua Road. Built in 1964, the entire community features Western-style architecture that was trendy and modern at the time. As time passed and the area’s vibrancy faded, the resulting sense of loneliness has attracted travelers who appreciate this kind of atmosphere.

The white spiral staircase, though set against a chaotic building exterior, is remarkably eye-catching. The South Airport Apartments were also one of the filming locations for Luc Besson’s famous movie “Lucy” in Taipei. Located near the South Airport Night Market, it’s not only bustling but also home to many delicious foods, some of which were recommended in the 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand guide. The unique architectural style and community vibe make it one of the representative spots of Taipei’s local life.
