The Happiness Box and Smile Box, located along the moat behind the city center, were completed and opened on May 9 after renovation. They were transformed into a high-quality structure that combines a viewing platform with public restrooms, becoming a new industrial-style leisure attraction in Hsinchu. When lit up at night, they add even more romance to the moat area and serve as a secret elevated dating spot.

The Happiness Box and Smile Box simplify the volume of the old structures, using durable and stylish corten steel for the exterior. The first floor mainly houses public restrooms and pedestrian entrances, while the second floor features an "observation deck" where visitors can take a break. When illuminated at night, it becomes even more romantic. While strolling through Hsinchu City, you can slow down and admire the beauty of the moat from above.

The renovated Happiness Box and Smile Box complement surrounding classic buildings such as the City Hall Plaza, Hsinchu City Art Gallery, and the city’s historic brick structures. The moat public restrooms have also been upgraded with additional women’s toilets, family-friendly facilities, accessible restrooms, and improved lighting and ventilation, meeting various needs while being both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
The renovation has made them not only more comfortable but also more beautiful.
The surfaces in front of the Hsinchu Art Gallery, 228 Peace Park, and the “two boxes” at the entrance of the underground parking lot were originally two ordinary concrete buildings, serving only ventilation and entrance functions. Due to aging facilities, peeling exterior tiles, and residual stains, their appearance clashed with the surrounding environment, prompting the renovation.
Echoing the style of surrounding classic buildings, they use stylish corten steel.
Through the design of corten steel, what was once just a ventilated station has been transformed into an artistic public space. With the addition of a second-floor observation deck, the Happiness Box and Smile Box have truly become recreational spaces that bring happiness and smiles. It's the perfect spot for a romantic rooftop date, offering views of the moat and centuries-old historical sites in the old town.
