Known as the “Dragon Ball of Taiwan,” Keelung Islet was closed in 2014 due to damage from Typhoon Soudelor and has finally been confirmed to reopen fully on June 25. The mysterious island, closed for five years, is making a comeback. During the closure, harbor repairs and reinforcement projects were carried out, along with the development of various visitor service facilities. Hiking up the trail offers a unique view of the Keelung Sea Sill, a distinctive landscape only found on the island.

Keelung Islet is a small island formed by undersea volcanic eruptions. It is essentially solidified magma that encountered seawater, creating “igneous rock.” Constantly shaped by waves and sea winds, it features unique cliff coastlines. The island is surrounded by steep cliffs with almost no flat land, and is dotted with numerous sea caves and rock reefs, earning it the reputation of a volcanic geological park.

Visitors can take boats from Bisha Fishing Port or the small boat pier at Keelung Port. Each vessel is staffed with professional guides who lead tours and ensure safety. Additionally, the Jiuqudong Trail, famous for its marble canyon, has completed its falling rock protection project. Safety facilities have been enhanced, and the trail has undergone renovations. New features such as scenic tunnels, waterway trails, and restrooms have been added. A trial opening began at 9 a.m. on June 24 to monitor usage and allow for adjustments and improvements.

The entrance to the Jiuqudong Trail is located at the west entrance of the Jiuqudong Tunnel on the Central Cross-Island Highway. The trail is 700 meters long and requires a return trip along the same path. In addition to the scenic tunnel, there is also a waterway trail that lies lower than the main path, bringing visitors closer to the canyon. From this vantage point, you can get nearer to the gorge, listen to the thunderous roar of the rapids, and feel the powerful erosive force of the Liwu River.
