Taiwan’s most beautiful beach landmark becomes a lost view: Yuguang Island Sunset Tower to be demolished

Yuguang Island, known for its breathtaking sunset views, has been hailed by netizens as Taiwan’s most beautiful beach. The sandy shore features numerous land art installations for travelers to take photos and check in, among which the most famous — the Sunset Tower — was involved in an accident earlier this month when elementary school students took shelter from the rain on the beach and a collapsed bamboo shed tragically fell on them. After coordination by the Tainan City Government, Hugo, the creator of the Sunset Tower, will dismantle it himself.

Located in Tainan, Yuguang Island is a small independent island in the southwest of Annan District, connected to Annan via the Yuguang Bridge. This tranquil beach was once a hidden gem known only to a few — crossing just one bridge felt like entering another world.

In recent years, with the rise of the internet and the popularity of installation art, Yuguang Island, also known as Crescent Bay, has transformed into an open-air exhibition space. The most well-known of these is the Sunset Tower, created by British artist Hugo using discarded oyster shed materials found on the beach. Standing 40 meters tall, the tower complements the scenic beauty of Crescent Bay’s shoreline.

With its breathtaking sunset views and spectacular installation art, Yuguang Island has attracted not only many beauty bloggers, influencers, and photography enthusiasts, but also a growing number of surfers. Many have praised it as “Tainan’s version of Kenting.” When summer arrives, it becomes one of Taiwan’s most popular tourist destinations.

In recent years, the number of visitors to Yuguang Island has gradually increased. However, due to insufficient infrastructure on the beach, many people have built their own bamboo sheds, raising safety concerns and leading to a year-by-year increase in litter. The Tainan City Government stated that it will hold coordination meetings to discuss timelines for dealing with other towers and bamboo structures on the island. Travelers visiting Yuguang Island should also pay attention to their own safety.
