EVA Air strike threatens summer travel plans; July flight cancellations to be announced

The EVA Air flight attendants' strike has entered its fifth day, with both labor and management refusing to back down. EVA Air recently announced that it will release a list of flights canceled in July due to the strike by June 26 at the earliest, allowing passengers to prepare in advance—but this may also signal that the strike will be prolonged.

During the strike, the Taoyuan City Flight Attendants’ Union has made demands on EVA Air, among which the “no free rider” clause and labor directors are the two most contentious issues between the two sides and the main reasons behind the breakdown of negotiations. Recently, EVA Air also announced that it plans to recruit about 200 new flight attendants this year to meet frontline passenger demand, and has opened recruitment to male flight attendants as well.

All relevant agencies are continuing their contingency plans for passenger diversion. Over the next four days, EVA Air will maintain 40% capacity. Originally scheduled to operate 181 flights on the 24th, EVA Air has already canceled 108 flights, affecting as many as 23,000 passengers. It also continues to release flight cancellation plans for the 29th and 30th, and will keep posting information on upcoming flight cancellations for the next week, helping passengers prepare early.

As of today, a total of 423 flights have been canceled due to the strike, affecting 88,000 people—surpassing the scale of the February 2024 China Airlines pilots’ strike, which canceled 214 flights, making this the largest disruption to passenger services in Taiwan’s aviation history. On June 30, the union plans to hold a vote to decide whether to continue the strike, while also hoping both sides can return to the negotiation table.
