It is the largest church in Italy, and its dome is the largest brick dome in the world. During its construction, the base of the dome was not a perfect octagon, making it difficult for the sections to meet at the center. St. Peter’s Basilica is located within Vatican City, an inland nation situated on a hill northwest of Rome, the capital of Italy. It is the seat of the highest authority of the Catholic Church, the residence of its supreme leader, and the spiritual center for one-sixth of the world’s population. It is also the smallest country in the world by territory.
 
During the Renaissance, the Pope decided to rebuild the church. The project, which spanned 120 years, involved architects such as Donato Bramante and Michelangelo. The most eye-catching feature, the grand dome, was designed by Michelangelo.
 
The central baldachin of the church, built in 1624, is the world’s largest bronze structure, weighing 37,000 kilograms and situated directly above St. Peter’s tomb. The interior of the church showcases exceptional craftsmanship and artistry, including Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the "Pietà."
