Known as the land of fire and ice, its unique terrain and climate create diverse, rich, and captivating landscapes. Travelers can walk on glaciers, explore waterfalls, and even dive between tectonic plates. Those who have been there often say one trip isn’t enough, and many return annually. Below are seven breathtaking spots that Iceland enthusiasts never tire of.

1.Blue Lagoon
 
The Blue Lagoon, also known as the Blue Lake, is a famous geothermal spa in Iceland. Formed partly from volcanic lava, the lagoon maintains a year-round temperature of about 37–39°C. Rich in minerals, it is a renowned tourist attraction.
 
The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, 39 kilometers from the capital, Reykjavík. The lagoon’s blue color comes not only from its silicon, minerals, and algae but also from how the silicon refracts sunlight, creating its iconic blue hue.
 
Besides the hot springs, the Blue Lagoon also features numerous saunas and steam rooms, as well as a massage waterfall. Visitors can enjoy soaking in the lagoon, applying silica mud masks, and taking full advantage of these facilities.

2.Plane Wreck
 
Most of Iceland’s attractions are natural wonders, but the plane wreck is one of the few man-made sites. It gained fame in recent years after photographers from around the world captured stunning images, making it a popular spot in Iceland.
 
To see the plane wreck, the main option is to drive there yourself. Enter the GPS coordinates “63 27.546, -19 21.887” to locate it.
 
It’s about a 4-kilometer walk from the parking lot to the wreck, taking roughly 2 hours round trip, plus an additional 2 hours or so for photography and sightseeing—plan for about 4 hours total, as it’s only accessible on foot.
 
Visitors are reminded that the wreck’s natural appearance, shaped by years of wind and weather, is part of its charm. Many tourists climb inside the wreckage for photos, but this is not allowed. Please respect the site and travel responsibly.

3.Vatnajökull Glacier
 
Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier, is located in the southeast of the country. Covering about 8% of Iceland’s total area, it spans 8,100 square kilometers and is also the largest glacier by volume in Europe.
 
The glacier’s ice averages 400 meters thick, with the thickest parts nearly 1,000 meters deep. Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur (2,110 meters), lies just south of the Vatnajökull ice cap.
 
Hiking on the glacier cannot be done alone; you must join a guided tour. Local guides provide safety equipment and lead the way to ensure a safe experience. The glacier features numerous crevasses, and you may hear the sound of melting water as you walk.
 
Iceland’s high latitude results in an extreme climate. Glacier hiking, camping, and glacier lagoon boat tours should only be attempted in stable weather conditions. Travelers should monitor weather changes, dress warmly, and avoid pushing themselves if they feel unwell.

4.Hidden Waterfall
 
The official name of the hidden waterfall is Bruarfoss Waterfall. It earned the beautiful nickname “Hidden Waterfall” due to its relatively secluded location.
 
As it is not an official natural attraction, if the weather is poor, the mud and melting snow along the way can be extremely slippery. Be sure to wear anti-slip boots or even ice cleats, and always pay close attention to safety.
 
The water flow of the hidden waterfall is not the most powerful or spectacular, but its various streams cascade down, converging into a gem-like turquoise river that looks incredibly dreamy.
 
Since it’s not a popular tourist spot, there usually aren’t many people, allowing for some great photo opportunities. However, in less crowded areas, it’s even more important to stay vigilant—never underestimate the power of nature, and always respect it while enjoying its beauty.
