Dotonbori Thousand Lantern Festival – Top 10 Summer Festivals in Osaka

At Dotonbori River, a must-visit attraction in Osaka, Kansai, the “Manten Festival” kicks off on July 1 with over 1,300 lanterns illuminating the summer nights, enriching the area with traditional Japanese charm. The festival continues until August 31 and also marks the start of a series of summer festivals across southern Osaka.

The “Dotonbori River Manten Festival” decorates about 800 meters of riverside pathways from Shinsekibashi to Nihonbashi with approximately 1,300 traditional Japanese lanterns, offering a cool and enchanting riverside ambiance in summer. Whether strolling along the riverbanks or taking a sightseeing cruise, you can enjoy the beautiful interplay of lantern light and Dotonbori’s neon signs while savoring delicious food and scenic views.
 

Namba Daisha Ikukunitama Shrine Ikukunitama Festival
The Ikukunitama Festival takes place on July 11 and 12. At 10 a.m., the main shrine ritual begins, reaching the ruins of Ikukunitama Shrine within Osaka Castle by noon. The procession then stops at a rest area at Honmachibashi in Chuo Ward before returning to the original shrine at 5 p.m. The highlight of the evening at 7 p.m. is the brave drummers’ ceremony, which truly represents the climax of the festival. The entire route is open for public viewing, where you can also enjoy a variety of traditional Japanese street food stalls.
 

Namba Yasaka Shrine Summer Festival Boat Procession
The Funatogu (boat procession) begins preparations at 6 p.m. on July 13, with the highlight starting from 8 to 9 p.m. Between Ebisubashi and Nihonbashi, over 20 boats perform the “Procession,” including bonfire boats, palanquin boats, offering boats, drum boats, and festival float boats. There are also performances featuring jazz music and dance, and boats rhythmically pounding out powerful “don-don” drumbeats. The people on board clap and keep the distinctive rhythm unique to Osaka, all visible from the Dotonbori riverside promenade.

Following the boat procession, the “Rikusho Festival” takes place on July 14. Centered around a portable shrine, the event features drum teams, lion dance troupes, and many local children participating. The long parade makes its way through Senba and Dotonbori, performing lion dances and traditional rice-throwing festivities on stage.
