Shirakawa-go, a village of gassho-style houses, is hailed by travelers as a dream destination that one must visit in a lifetime. Aside from being one of Japan’s three most mysterious places, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. This hidden paradise, secluded deep in the mountains, offers different kinds of beauty throughout the year, especially during winter when the evening illumination transforms the snowy landscape into a fairytale-like wonderland.

To help travelers plan their trips earlier, Shirakawa-go has announced the 2020 winter illumination dates: January 13, 19, 26, and February 2, 9, and 16 — six days in total, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM each evening.

The Shirakawa-go illumination is one of the most anticipated events of the year for visitors. During this time, the village turns silver-white, sparkling under warm lights that resemble a galaxy, creating an indescribably breathtaking scene. Travelers looking to experience this can start planning now.

Due to the large number of visitors drawn to the annual illumination event, a “full reservation system” has been in place since 2019. Whether you’re staying overnight in the village, using the parking lot for self-driving, or taking the observation deck bus, you must register and enter a lottery. Those not selected will not be allowed to enter the village to view the illumination.

This year’s reservation period begins in early August. Reservations are made online, and the lottery results will be notified to selected travelers around September 10. Parking reservations can be made starting September 10, on a first-come, first-served basis until full. Travelers must also reserve shuttle buses in advance — no public buses will be available after 5:30 PM. Those reserving taxis must also book parking spaces, with fees the same as for regular vehicles.
