Jiaying Lake, situated in the isolated Taihsi Township of Taitung, lies seven kilometers in a straight line from Xiangyang Mountain on the South Cross-Island Highway, at an altitude of 3,310 meters. It is the largest alpine lake on the main ridge of the southern Central Mountain Range.

The shore of Jiaying Lake is oval-shaped, leading some to call it the “egg pond.” However, due to its deep blue waters resembling a gem fallen from the heavens, people have given it the romantic name “angel’s tears.”

Though no streams feed into Jiaying Lake, its crystal-clear waters never dry up year-round, and the surrounding mountain scenery is captivating — making it a much-loved hiking spot in recent years.

The hiking trail to Jiaying Lake features rich and varied ecological scenery. Hikers can enter via the Daguanshan Tunnel entrance, reach the mid-section of the South Cross-Island Highway at Yamenkou, then continue to the Xiangyang Recreation Area and Xiangyang Mountain Hut. Along the way, you can admire the views of the Xiangyang Great Collapse Wall and the Guan Mountain Great Collapse Wall. Upon arriving at the Xiangyang Mountain hiking entrance, you’ll reach Jiaying Lake and Sancha Mountain. The breathtaking scenery before your eyes serves as the perfect finale to any hiker’s adventure.
