Dreamy Rainbow Light Wall: World’s First Airport Terminal Named After an LGBT Political Leader

In the movie "Milk," Sean Penn portrays American gay rights activist Harvey Milk as he fights for survival. To recognize his contributions to advancing LGBT human rights, San Francisco International Airport has named its newly renovated terminal the “Harvey Milk Terminal 1,” which officially opened on July 23. This allows travelers from around the world to learn more about this civil rights leader’s profound impact on the rights of the LGBT community.

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in U.S. politics. In 1977, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where he championed legislation to protect gay rights and encouraged LGBTQ+ individuals to come out. He was a pioneer of the American gay rights movement. Unfortunately, the following year, Harvey Milk was tragically assassinated alongside then-San Francisco Mayor George Moscone.

The Harvey Milk Terminal 1 cost NT$74.6 billion to build. Its boarding area is designed like a VIP lounge and features 14 public art installations, offering travelers opportunities to appreciate and interact with art while waiting for their flights.

The new terminal has launched a permanent exhibition titled “Harvey Milk: Messenger of Hope,” featuring hundreds of large-scale images of Harvey Milk and commemorative items, providing passengers with a unique airport experience.

San Francisco International Airport Director Ivar Satero stated that airports are often people’s first impression of a country or city. Harvey Milk embodies San Francisco’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion, and he hopes visitors will draw inspiration from his life story.
