The Old Market Gets a Makeover: South Gate Market to Undergo Renovation Starting October for Its 2.0 Version

Taipei’s traditional food hub “South Gate Market” will undergo renovation, with newly unveiled design plans showing a stylish interior and exterior that’s expected to become another popular photo spot.

Recently, as part of the traditional market transformation initiative, not only the iconic South Gate Market but also other well-known markets such as Huannan Market, First Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market, Chenggong Market, and Dalong Market are scheduled for renovation. South Gate Market will relocate to a temporary market in October, while the South Gate Building on Taipei’s Roosevelt Road will be demolished in November.

As one of Taipei’s historically significant markets, South Gate Market originated as the “Senjui Market,” a produce distribution center during the Japanese colonial period, and was renamed to its current well-known title in 1983. The market offers a wide range of traditional snacks, fresh produce, groceries, and is a go-to destination for many families when purchasing New Year’s dishes.
