The iconic Yangming Theater in the Shilin Night Market district, a cherished memory for many, will cease operations on September 15. It is set to be demolished as part of an urban renewal project to make way for a shopping mall. The news has left many netizens heartbroken.

Opened in 1949 in the Shilin commercial district, Yangming Theater has been in operation for over 70 years. It not only attracted crowds but also spurred the gathering of street vendors and businesses, helping shape the Shilin Night Market as it is known today. It is the oldest movie theater in the Taipei area.

With a 70-year history, Yangming Theater is among Taipei’s oldest cinemas and has played a key role in the development of the Shilin Night Market district.
The announcement of Yangming Theater’s impending closure has drawn widespread nostalgia and regret. In the future, the old building will be redeveloped into an eight-story shopping mall, with reconstruction expected to take three years. During the renovation period, not only will the theater be closed, but nearby food stalls—including popular ones like Hao Da Da Chicken Cutlet and Shilin Sausage—also fear a drop in foot traffic or dust issues from construction, and are considering relocating or even taking a temporary break.

The food stalls in front of the theater also plan to temporarily relocate their businesses.
While fans are heartbroken by the news of the theater’s closure, it is not shutting down permanently. It is only temporarily closing in line with the urban renewal plan. The new shopping mall will feature a cinema on its upper floors, and Yangming Theater will reopen with all-new equipment under the same name after the renovation—it is not truly disappearing from history.

In the future, Yangming Theater will be revamped within the newly reconstructed building, with upgraded facilities, and will make a fresh comeback in a completely renewed environment.
The new shopping mall will consist of an eight-story above-ground structure and two underground levels. The first and second floors will house general retail shops, the third floor will be dedicated to F&B outlets, and the fourth through eighth floors will feature a cinema. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the long-cherished Yangming Theater return in a revitalized and refreshed setting.
