Located in Tainan, Madou sits in the central part of the Chianan Plain. Known for its fertile soil and the flow of the Zengwen River, it’s famous for its pomelo production. The Shuikutou Relics site in Madou is an archaeological site that was once an important settlement of the Siraya people. In the past, the Fifth King of the Nankunshen Daitian Temple was said to have indicated this location as the “Dragon Throat Acupoint,” prompting believers to dig, unearthing artifacts such as large stone carts, massive camphor wood pieces, and pottery shards. In 2008, the Academia Sinica confirmed the existence of the Dahhu Culture stratum during an excavation.

Madou Daitian Temple has become a very popular tourist attraction in Tainan in recent years. Aside from the temple itself, it features hyper-realistic scenes of the Eighteen Levels of Hell and Heaven, as well as a 38-meter-tall Dragon Watchtower. The latest highlight is a roller-style slide—super fun overall.

The Madou Daitian Temple primarily enshrines the Five Lords of Heaven. Established in 1956, it brought together renowned craftsmen from across the country and took ten years to complete. The temple features a grand architectural scale, including the nation’s first three-dimensional door gods carved from camphor wood, exquisite Koji ceramics and cut-and-paste decorations, and paintings by masters awarded the Heritage Crafts Award—each piece is a fine work of art, worthy of careful appreciation.

Madou was also once a major hub for pickle production. Pickle Alley is located at the end of Ren’ai Road in Madou District. As the name suggests, it was the distribution center for the pickle industry. It has now been relocated to Peiwen Elementary School and developed into the Pickle Culture Park. Its highlight is the large wooden barrels used for pickling, each about two meters tall with a diameter of 1.6 to 2.5 meters, capable of pickling up to ten thousand kilograms of pickles—an impressive sight.
