Controversy over renaming Banqiao MRT Station sparks heated debate online!

The New Taipei City Department of Rapid Transit Systems recently proposed renaming Banqiao Station on the Taipei Metro Bannan Line to "New Taipei City–" Station, aiming to increase its visibility. The announcement has sparked widespread online discussion, with netizens holding strongly opposing views.

Banqiao Station is a major transportation hub where three rail lines intersect, serving as a vital transit point for many daily commuters. The department believes renaming the station will boost the visibility of New Taipei City–, but most netizens think the change is unnecessary. In response, the Banqiao District Office held a public hearing to gather opinions.

Some netizens argue that most people are already accustomed to the name "Banqiao Station" as a landmark, making the rename unnecessary. Others point out that as Banqiao is a major transport hub connecting three rail lines, renaming the MRT station would also require renaming the Taiwan Railways and high-speed rail stations—something they see as time-consuming and laborious. However, some believe Banqiao covers a broad area, and renaming the MRT station could help clarify its exact location.

After the public hearing, most people opposed renaming Banqiao MRT Station. However, they suggested adding an annotation after the existing station name to include “New Taipei City–.” Although the renaming proposal was not passed, the details regarding the annotation method will be confirmed and then forwarded to Taipei City– for further action.
