The Merlion in Singapore comes to Taipei！ Limited-time Peranakan cultural experience

The Singapore Tourism Board, under the brand philosophy and spirit of “Singapore – A Place in the Heart,” is dedicated to promoting Taiwan’s travel market to Singapore. To allow more Taiwanese consumers to experience Singaporean culture, the “DBS Singapore Fun Fest,” organized by DBS Bank, made a lively debut at Xinyi Xin Tian Di’s Fragrance Plaza in Taipei from August 28 to September 1！

Descendants of foreign men who migrated to Southeast Asia and local women are called “Baba” for males and Peranakan (Nonya) for females. Established in 1945 in Singapore’s Katong/Rochor Peranakan cultural district, the historic “Kim Choo Kueh Chang” is famed for its authentic Peranakan kuih chang (glutinous rice dumplings). The third-generation successors, brothers Julian Wong Chun Yung and Desmond Wong Ting Siang, have inherited the culinary traditions of “Kim Choo Kueh Chang” and founded the “Kim Choo Kueh Chang Heritage Gallery” to promote Peranakan culture.

Julian Wong has also taught himself Peranakan beadwork and embroidery, becoming a renowned traditional Peranakan costume designer in Singapore. Using innovative techniques, he blends traditional attire with modern fashion elements, creating contemporary Peranakan garments that are both elegant and trendy.

This time, the Kim Choo Kueh Chang Heritage Gallery is specially invited to create a “Peranakan Cultural Experience Zone,” where consumers can try on Peranakan costumes and easily immerse themselves in the culture of Singapore’s Peranakan community. By following instructions to change outfits and upload photos, participants can receive exclusive gifts—limited quantities available, while stocks last！

In addition, the weekend stage activities are absolutely spectacular. Julian Wong will lead models to demonstrate traditional costume styling and share the history and evolution of the attire. The dynamic and engaging stage demonstrations will surely captivate consumers. Moreover, the super cute mascot Merli the Lion will make a lively appearance in a street parade at Fragrance Plaza！ With a wealth of activities, everyone is invited to experience Singaporean culture in the Xinyi District.
