Starting September 1st, travel subsidies are increased! Nine new regulations to note

Following the implementation of mandatory card swiping for both boarding and alighting on buses in the Greater Taipei area on July 1st, as well as the plastic straw ban under the convenience store plastic reduction policy, nine new regulations will take effect starting September 1st.

1. Autumn and Winter Travel Subsidy

The Tourism Bureau has launched an expanded autumn and winter travel subsidy program starting September 1st, offering accommodation subsidies for both independent travelers and tour groups. Independent travelers only need to book through participating accommodations and register on the Tourism Bureau’s website to enjoy a NT$1,000 accommodation discount.

2. Rent Subsidy for Singles and Families with Children

The Ministry of the Interior will begin accepting applications for rent subsidies for single youths and families with children starting September 2nd. Single youths aged 20–40, families married for less than two years, and families with underage children may apply for different subsidy amounts depending on the city or county, with single youths in Taipei eligible for up to NT$4,000 per month in rent assistance.

3. Expanded Use of Taipei Senior Citizen Card

Taipei’s Senior Citizen Card currently offers NT$480 in monthly credits for seniors aged 65+ to use on public transport such as buses and the MRT. The new regulation expands its use to sports centers, allowing seniors to access swimming pools, gyms, and other recreational facilities.
 

4. Increased Frequency on Danhai Light Rail

Since its launch, the Danhai Light Rail has improved convenience for those traveling between Tamsui and the Greater Taipei area. Starting September, additional trains will be added during weekday evening rush hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, reducing intervals to one train every 12 minutes.

5. Additional Tests for Motorcycle License Exams

To enhance traffic safety for motorcyclists, starting September, the motorcycle license exam will include short video-based test questions on the Motorcycle Hazard Perception Education Platform. These scenarios are designed to help test-takers recognize and prevent potential accidents. Completing this perception test is mandatory before scheduling the motorcycle license exam.
 

6. Smoking Ban in Covered Walkways in Taipei and New Taipei

Starting September, smoking is prohibited in front of convenience stores and coffee shops located in covered walkways. Violators may face fines ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$10,000 under the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act.
