Want to see a Jurassic-like movie scene without flying to Hawaii? A super spectacular canyon leads straight to the blue coast — a hidden gem for millions of great photos and a perfect weekend getaway.

The Jinguashi Geopark is located in Jinguashi, Jiufen, New Taipei. It was formerly the Benshan Mine, the site of the largest ore body in Jinguashi — the “Main Ore Body” — and also the location of the area’s most important historical gold and copper veins.

In the past, gold prospectors discovered the small Jinguashi outcrop at Jiufen while panning up the stream from Houtong, and the following year they found the outcrop of the large Jinguashi gold vein. The exposed rock formations resembled golden melons, hence the name “Jinguashi,” which also became the name of the locality.

The Benshan Mine’s mineral veins extend from the 600-meter-high summit of the Big Jinguashi down to 130 meters below sea level. The widest part of the ore body reaches 100 meters, and the height of the Jinguashi mountain peak has been reduced from 660 meters above sea level to around 500 meters due to mining.

As the Benshan Mine was an open-pit mine, the exposed parts of the ore veins are very clear. Today, it serves as a living geological classroom, and the scenery is simply dreamlike.
