Many Taiwanese travelers are placing increasing importance on local, authentic, and genuine tourism experiences, and the diverse accommodation platform Airbnb has hit a record high this year, surpassing 1.44 million users—marking an incredible growth of over ninefold since mid-2014.

The main types of Airbnb users in Taiwan are millennials and women, with the average traveler age being 31, and 58% of them female. Meanwhile, senior travelers aged 60 and above are the fastest-growing user group on the platform. The increasing choice of Airbnb among Taiwanese travelers reflects a desire for unique, authentic, and sustainable travel experiences.

A survey conducted by Airbnb in Taiwan targeting both hosts and guests revealed that 83% of travelers want to experience life like a local during their trips, which is why they choose Airbnb. In addition, 66% of respondents said that home-sharing accommodations are more environmentally friendly, and 95% chose Airbnb mainly due to its simple and secure payment system.

The top overseas destinations for Taiwanese Airbnb users are Japan, South Korea, the United States, Mainland China, and Thailand. While these are also popular among the general Taiwanese public, Airbnb becomes a preferred choice for Taiwanese travelers in relatively less-known countries or regions, especially where local travel information is scarce, highlighting the appeal of Airbnb’s focus on real human interaction.

“Citizen travel” is the dominant user group on Airbnb in Taiwan, making up 40% of all Taiwanese travelers.
