Jinghua City to Go Dark: The World’s Largest Spherical Mall Bows Out of History

Opened 18 years ago this September, Jinghua City was once the world’s largest spherical mall, boasting a record-breaking foot traffic of 500,000 visitors in a single day. In recent years, however, with the rapid rise of the Xinyi commercial district, business at Jinghua City has declined sharply. It has now been confirmed that the mall will close its doors at the end of the year. This department store, filled with childhood memories for many Taipei residents, will become history.

Built by business magnate Shen Qingjing, Jinghua City was once the world’s largest spherical mall, constructed with an investment of 24 billion Taiwan dollars and enjoying immense popularity. However, due to the unsuccessful revitalization of the Taipei Railway Workshop and delays in projects such as the Taipei Dome, pedestrian flow between the Xinyi and Zhongxiao commercial districts could not be effectively connected—becoming a major factor in Jinghua City’s decline.

However, due to its proximity to the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and with the potential boost in foot traffic and economic activity expected after the completion of the Taipei Dome, the future prospects are promising. As a result, the property will be publicly auctioned on September 25 with a reserve price of 34.2 billion Taiwan dollars. Additionally, as all mall concessions need to be cleared before the year-end closure, retailers are currently holding major clearance sales. The public is welcome to visit and take a stroll down memory lane—revisiting the Jinghua City we once shopped at together.
