In 2015, the “Causeway Bay Books incident” erupted in Hong Kong. The Causeway Bay Books, which sold banned books from China in the context of “one country, two systems,” saw five of its shareholders and employees go missing one after another, only returning to Hong Kong the following year. As a result, the bookstore was forced to close. Now, there is hope that the Causeway Bay Books will be relaunched in Taiwan, and once it opens, it is expected to become yet another unique and special attraction.

Mr. Lam Wing-kee, founder of Causeway Bay Books, launched a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding platform “flyingv” on September 5 to gather funds for reopening the bookstore. Within less than a day, the goal of NT$2.8 million was successfully reached. The first choice for the new location is the bustling Ximending area, popular among Asian tourists. The exact site is expected to be finalized within six months, with hopes to officially open before mid-next year.

Taiwan’s version of Causeway Bay Books will be rooted in Hong Kong culture, leveraging the advantages of Taiwan to continue importing and exporting publications. It will mainly sell books on society, politics, economics, art, and literature. The store will continue to bring in the majority of books from Hong Kong and China, maintaining the same proportion as before and not changing this regardless of its location.

The target funds raised through the campaign will allocate 60% for book procurement, 25% for renovation, 10% for initial rent expenses, and 5% for other miscellaneous costs. Any surplus will serve as operational funds for the future, mainly used to organize exchange events. This allows every donor to become a “shareholder” in the spiritual sense of the bookstore, positioning Causeway Bay Books as a guardian of culture and a hub that connects the mutual aid network for Hongkongers in Taiwan.
