The world’s four major fashion weeks are the biggest gatherings in the global fashion industry, held twice a year—February and March for that season’s Fall/Winter collections, and September and October for the following year’s Spring/Summer collections. They are traditionally held in the order of New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week. The following fun facts will give you a glimpse into the secrets of the fashion world.

Fashion weeks originated in the late 19th century. Designers initially hired women to wear their creations near racetracks in hopes of attracting media attention and press coverage. Over time, this evolved into high-end designers hiring models to showcase their designs to affluent consumers. Eventually, the world’s first fashion week — New York Fashion Week — was born when editors from New York were unable to travel to Paris during World War II, which led to the creation of the American fashion week.

Each of the four fashion weeks has a unique character. New York Fashion Week focuses on commercial and casual styles, featuring a vibrant atmosphere with a large number of emerging designers and students. London Fashion Week is known for being avant-garde, showcasing many innovative and niche brands. Milan Fashion Week, due to its geographic ties, emphasizes classic and stylish aesthetics, featuring globally renowned Italian fashion houses such as GUCCI, PRADA, and ARMANI. Paris Fashion Week is famous for its collection of luxury brands, including iconic names like CHANEL, DIOR, and YSL.

Attending a fashion show at a fashion week requires an invitation, and brands are extremely selective when distributing them. About 40% go to international fashion media, 30% to well-known fashion influencers, 10% to celebrities, 10% to top-tier brand clients, and 10% as reserves. These invitations serve to generate buzz and visibility, allowing attendees to use their influence and platforms to promote the brands and help establish their status in the fashion world.

Fashion shows at these events are generally short, lasting around 20 minutes on average, with much of the time spent waiting. This is not only due to the schedule of nearly a hundred shows happening within a short period, but also because of possible delays in outfit deliveries or arrivals of VIP guests. As a result, there's usually a wait before each show begins, giving attendees a chance to network and even take photos for social media.
