On September 26, 2018, the awards banquet for the China Hot Air Balloon Club League Competition – Xiangyang Station in Hubei Province was grandly held at the Xiangyang Minfa Shiji Hotel. Key leaders and guests from the Chinese Aeronautical Sports Association and the Xiangyang Municipal Government attended the award ceremony, presenting certificates, medals, and other honors to the winning clubs.

The competition featured competitive events such as Target Flying and Wandering Waltz. Sixty professional pilots from thirty of China’s top hot air balloon clubs engaged in several days of intense and exciting competition. In the end, Zhucheng Hot Air Balloon Sports Culture Co., Ltd. claimed the championship with 2793 points; Xi’an Bailucang General Aviation Technology Co., Ltd. and Zhengzhou Ao-Xiang Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. secured the second and third places with 2792 and 2663 points respectively. The fourth to sixth places were awarded to Zhongfei Veterans Aviation Club, Datong Aeronautical Sports Association, and Beijing Tianlang Hot Air Balloon Technical Training Club.

Over the past few days, hot air balloon pilots studied weather conditions every morning and evening to plan their competition strategies. Every day at 6 a.m., they began fuel filling, equipment inspection, weather assessment, and flight scheduling. The professionalism of the event and the organization of the competition were evident throughout the entire process — from balloon inflation and takeoff to flight and landing. The pilots’ spirit of perseverance, ambition, cooperation, and competitive drive left a valuable legacy for the spectators and visitors.

Looking back at this event, in addition to the thrilling competitive aspects, the diverse range of cultural activities also left a deep impression. The spectacular performances at the opening ceremony transported the audience’s thoughts back to ancient Xiangyang via the floating dream of hot air balloons, creating unforgettable and wonderful memories for attendees. The balloon lighting show was magical, with dozens of hot air balloons illuminating one by one to music, drawing cheers and awe from thousands of onlookers. The fire-spouting parade held on Mid-Autumn Festival night stunned the entire city — the streets along the parade route were packed with residents and tourists, creating a truly extraordinary scene. As flames burst in sync with music, they added a brilliant touch to the moonlit Mid-Autumn sky. When the convoy passed by, everyone present pulled out their phones to capture the stunning fusion of light, sound, scenery, and moonlight. The daily tethered balloon rides were also full of novelty and fun. Some residents from nearby cities, upon learning that the hot air balloon league was being held in Xiangyang, specifically brought their children to participate, hoping to enjoy an unconventional Mid-Autumn holiday and create unique family bonding experiences.

During the event, major media outlets including CCTV, Xiangyang TV, Xiangyang Daily, Travel Satellite TV, and Sohu Sports paid close attention to the competition. The public eagerly interacted, taking photos and sharing content, pushing the use of social media to new heights. This fully showcased the vibrant and aspirational spirit of the people of Xiangyang. The event trended widely on Weibo and WeChat, with the discussion area filled with the excitement and joy of netizens, bringing Xiangyang’s historical and cultural stories back into the national spotlight.

It is believed that the integration of sports and tourism industries in Xiangyang will promote the coordinated development of regional tourism. While establishing a new flagship for Xiangyang as one of the most popular sports and cultural tourism cities in Hubei and even across China, it will also serve as a model for “how low-altitude tourism can drive urban economic transformation.”
