In the past, the cycling paths from Xizhi in New Taipei to Keelung were not connected. Thanks to the revitalization and reuse of the Taiwan Railways Wudu Tunnel, the abandoned tunnel has been brought back to life and completes the final leg of the New Taipei–Keelung River cycling path, fulfilling cyclists’ dream of riding across cities.

“The Charm of the Old Path Revived” is a landscape improvement project for the old Wudu Freight Yard tunnel of Taiwan Railways. Stretching from Section 2 of Changxing Street in Xizhi to Dounan Street in Keelung City, it completes the final leg of the cycling path connecting New Taipei and the Keelung River, spanning a total length of 631 meters (including an 182-meter tunnel section), allowing riders to travel directly from New Taipei through the historic tunnel to Keelung.

This Wudu Tunnel has a history of over 100 years, originally built in the early days of Japanese rule. Its brick, round-arched structure gives it a classic vintage charm. Therefore, the design preserves its original appearance while adding lighting and a ground-level cycling path. Additionally, background information about the tunnel is displayed outside the tunnel entrance, and a rest area has been set up in the culvert near the tunnel for cyclists to take a break. The culvert serves as a canvas for colorful art during the day and transforms into a dazzling light display at night, aiming to become a new local highlight.

Riders can enjoy different views along the river at various times of the day—stunning daytime scenery, enchanting sunset hues, or the illuminated design of the Starlight Bridge at night. Furthermore, the cycling network along the Xizhi riverside will continue to expand, with plans to extend it by another 2.2 kilometers next year, linking up with Nangang.
