Entering Nanzhuang along County Highway 124, the gentle breeze brushes through your hair while sunlight spills over the rice fields. The breathtaking scenery before you resembles a masterpiece painted by a world-class artist, transporting you to a paradise free from work and stress.

Built in the 11th year of the Taisho era, the Glutinous Rice Bridge is tucked away along a small path through the rice fields of Nanfu Yuanlin. With clear stream water flowing beside it and sparrows chirping as they hop along the field ridges, the beautiful and serene rice fields make you forget the hustle and bustle and worries of daily life.

Nanzhuang once had a “black gold” era, driven mainly by forestry and mining industries. With the ups and downs and transformation of these industries, Nanzhuang has preserved its most natural landscapes, avoiding excessive development and cultivation, and has even earned international recognition as a Slow City.

About a half-hour drive from Nanzhuang Old Street lies Xiangtian Lake, with its beautiful lakeside scenery. It is a sacred site of the Saisiyat people filled with mysterious stories. The lake surface is often shrouded in mist, adding to its mystical aura. When summer nights arrive, you can even spot fireflies here.

For travelers who love gourmet food, you must not miss the two must-try ice treats on Nanzhuang Old Street. In Osmanthus Alley, there are two ice desserts you have to try: “Osmanthus Ice-glazed Sweet Tofu Balls” and “Red Bean Matcha Ice.” The sweet tofu balls made from glutinous rice become even more chewy when served chilled, paired with Nanzhuang’s specialty osmanthus wine, offering a uniquely delightful aroma of sweet and fragrant osmanthus.
