Carrying decades of cherished memories for the people of Kaohsiung, the over 30-year-old "Labor Night Market" has become an integral part of daily life for locals. However, due to recent complaints from nearby residents, the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Economic Development has set a sunset clause, and the Labor Night Market will cease operations on November 11, leaving local visitors deeply saddened.

The Labor Night Market (Yide Night Market) is located on Yide Road in Qianzhen District and is a mobile night market that only gathers on Mondays. However, in reality, the Labor Night Market has been operating as an illegal street stall for over 30 years. The weekly gatherings have caused inconvenience to nearby residents' comings and goings, along with unsanitary conditions, overwhelming noise, and frequent police fines for illegal encroachments by vendors.

In 2012, the city established the "Kaohsiung City Temporary Centralized Hawkers' Market Management Self-Governance Ordinance," which allowed unauthorized road-side hawker gatherings to apply for setup under the name of a management committee within a seven-year application period. Approval was required to continue operations. However, the Labor Night Market has yet to complete the legal procedures, and thus has been ordered to shut down according to the law.

In the future, efforts may be made to find unused market land or discuss the use of public facility reservation land,planninga hawker market for vendors to use, guiding night market vendors to operate in legally sanctioned public markets or hawker markets, balancing legality and the livelihoods of vendors, bringing back familiar and beloved local flavors.
