As spring blooms and the new year arrives, we’re revealing the top six ways to celebrate spring in Tainan. During the Lunar New Year holiday, families can explore the ancient capital of Tainan together and immerse themselves in the local festive atmosphere.

Shopping for New Year goods and praying at temples have always been essential parts of the Lunar New Year. From exploring the Xinhua New Year Goods Street, the Tainan Veterans Village Food Festival, and the bustling Fuzhong Street Market, to joining the first incense grab at major temples and participating in various cultural events, these are must-visits when celebrating spring.

The “Xinhua New Year Goods Street” kicks off from January 18 to January 23 on the historic Xinhua Old Street, offering everything from dried goods and souvenirs to festive items for the season, ensuring shoppers head into the new year with full bags. After stocking up on essentials, visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Wude Hall, the Damaikang Story House (a complex of Japanese-style dormitories), the Jieyichang (old town hall), and the Yang Kui Literature Memorial Hall to soak in the rich cultural heritage of the old street.

The “Tainan Veterans Village Food Festival” returns after a five-year hiatus, taking place from January 9 to January 13 on the open space next to the Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium. In addition to inviting authentic veterans village food vendors, the festival also features festive New Year goods market stalls, street performances, lucky draws, and charity sales organized by nonprofit groups.

The “Confucius Temple God of Wealth Storytelling Spring Festival Carnival” will take place from the first to the fifth day of the Lunar New Year (January 25–29) on Fuzhong Street, featuring creative markets, street performances, and the God of Wealth handing out red envelopes—perfect for a post-Confucius Temple spring outing.

Additionally, praying at temples is an essential part of the festivities. During the Lunar New Year, representative temples in Tainan host a variety of vibrant prayer events, including the Dongshan Buddha Welcoming Ceremony, the Zhengtong Luermen Mazu Temple Spring Festival Carnival, the Luermen Tianhou Palace Cultural Festival, the Guanmiao Shanxi Temple Spring Cultural Festival, and the Nankunshen Daitianfu Temple Spring Festival activities. These events are held around the Lunar New Year and welcome visitors to pray at Tainan’s temples and experience the unique cultural charm of local temple celebrations.
