The Australian wildfires have been raging for over four months. According to Australian authorities, the affected area now spans the equivalent of 1.5 Taiwans, with nearly 500 million animals killed by the blazes. The severity of the wildfires is so extreme that they can even be seen from space.

The Australian wildfires have spread almost across the entire country, fueled by record-high temperatures, summer droughts, and strong winds. Temperatures hit a record 41.9 degrees Celsius, with the situation particularly severe in New South Wales in southeastern Australia. Air quality there has reached the worst levels globally, with the sky shrouded in thick smoke and turned red by the fires.

The affected area has now exceeded 1.5 Taiwans, with approximately 500 million animals consumed by the fires. In New South Wales, koalas—known for their slow movement—accounted for over 8,000 deaths. The wildfires have had the most significant impact on Australia’s ecological environment, with experts estimating that recovery could take at least 40 years.

Bushfires are not just an issue for Australian authorities but a global disaster. The record-high temperatures also serve as a warning from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere about the upcoming summer. Beyond sharing information to raise awareness about the disaster’s impact, what can we do? We can take action and contribute our part to the planet.
Here are some ways we can start with ourselves:
1. Reduce meat consumption
Livestock farming is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after energy production. Eating less meat can alleviate the burden on land.
2. Buy fewer imported goods
Global transportation systems are major contributors to carbon emissions. The farther goods are transported, the higher the emissions. Reducing demand helps control the market.
3. Use air conditioning less
Air conditioners are one of the culprits of global warming. Turning them off can effectively reduce hydrofluorocarbon emissions.
4. Cut unnecessary spending
Most products are sources of pollution. Reusing, recycling, and reducing production can effectively slow down pollution.
5. Use fewer plastic products
Plastic production and plastic itself account for 6% of global carbon emissions. Reducing usage can ease the Earth’s burden.
Environmental protection isn’t just a slogan—it should be practiced in every aspect of our lives. There’s only one Earth, and humans are just one part of its ecosystem. Our actions shape the environment’s future. Don’t let momentary convenience or selfishness lead to irreversible disasters. Protect the Earth starting with ourselves.
