Taichung has a new cultural destination that's a must for all the hipsters. The "Taichung Branch of the Imperial Sugar Factory," a historic building situated in East District, Taichung, was once a sugar mill during the Japanese colonial era. Following faithful restoration efforts and a one-month trial operation, it officially opened to the public on December 23.

The Imperial Sugar Factory was built in the 10th year of the Showa era (1935), originally serving as the operational space for the Taichung factory of the Japanese Imperial Sugar Co., Ltd. It witnessed the rise and fall of Taichung’s sugar industry and was designated as a historical building in 2016. After reopening in 2019, it has promoted industrial cultural exhibitions, themed restaurants, and the ProLab Craft Workshop, helping to preserve local heritage.

During its trial opening in November, it attracted many visitors of all ages. In addition to hosting irregular DIY workshops and lectures, the Imperial Sugar Factory also houses the 1935 Café&Bar, Ye Tang restaurant, the Pro Lab Craft Workshop, and various themed exhibitions, making it a lively destination.
