As winter approaches, Alishan gradually gets cooler. With the widening day-night temperature difference, the maple leaves on Alishan are slowly donning their vibrant red coats. The crimson foliage, paired with the scenery of the Alishan Forest Railway tracks, creates a breathtakingly healing view.

Popular maple leaf viewing spots within Alishan National Forest Recreation Area are mainly distributed around Xiaoliyuan Mountain, Zhushan, Alishan Botanical Garden, Duigao Mountain, the area near Zhapu Station, and Ciyun Temple.

The timing of Alishan’s maple foliage is generally consistent each year. The red leaves along Provincial Highway 18 usually make their first appearance from late October to early November, and then from late November to January, the maple leaves within Alishan National Forest Recreation Area take over the show.

Recently, heavy rain knocked many maple leaves off the trees, forming a stunning red leaf carpet. The dreamlike scene has become a unique and alternative winter attraction on Alishan.
